A Glimpse Into History
Carmel Valley has a storied past that dates back to the early 1800s, when it was first settled by Spanish missionaries and later became a prominent agricultural hub. Known for its fertile soil and ideal climate, the valley quickly gained a reputation for its vineyards and orchards.
Bernardus Marinus “Ben” Pon was a Dutch vintner, Olympian, and motor racing driver. He came to Carmel Valley in the early 1980s and fell in love with the area. Soon after he purchased a home and set out to make wine believing in the verdant valley’s potential to produce Bordeaux-style red wines and several other varietals. Always a visionary and pioneer, at 62 he then created Bernardus Lodge & Spa in 1999. The Lodge’s design pays homage to the rich history of Carmel Valley, incorporating elements of traditional Californian architecture with a modern twist.
