Earth Day at Carmel Valley Coffee: Brewing Sustainability with Huskee Original Cups

This April, as Earth Day (April 22) highlights the importance of protecting our planet, Carmel Valley Coffee Roasting Company is proud to celebrate what we’ve championed since 1994: premium organic coffee and real environmental responsibility. From our Certified Organic and Fair Trade beans to our small-batch roasting, sustainability has always been at the heart of every batch we roast in Carmel. This year, we’re leading with an inspiring innovation that turns coffee waste into everyday elegance: the Huskee Original cups.

From Coffee Byproduct to Your Favorite Mug: The Huskee Original Story

Every year, the coffee industry generates millions of tons of husks, the protective outer shells discarded after beans are harvested and processed. Huskee saw potential in that “waste” and created the Huskee Original: a sleek, durable reusable cup made entirely from repurposed coffee husks.

No virgin plastics. No single-use disposables headed to landfills. Just a BPA-free, dishwasher-safe, stackable cup that keeps your coffee hotter longer while staying cool to the touch. It’s as practical for your morning pour-over at home as it is for your to-go latte from our cafés. By choosing a Huskee Original, you’re helping close the loop in the coffee supply chain by diverting agricultural waste, supporting farmers, and dramatically reducing your daily environmental footprint.

We’re thrilled to offer Huskee Original mugs in our Carmel shops and right here on our website. To mark Earth Month, we’re running a special sale on Huskee Original cups in both sizes (8 oz and 16 oz) and both signature colors. Whether you’re brewing at home, commuting, or stopping by The Barnyard, Ocean Avenue, or Crossroads, these cups make every sip a little greener. Quantities are limited, so snag yours while the sale is on at carmelcoffeeroasters.com!

More Coffee-Friendly Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

There are plenty of other simple steps you can take with your daily brew:

  • Repurposing our Organic Coffee Burlap Bags: Another simple way we’re keeping waste out of the landfill is by setting out our empty burlap green coffee bags for customers and local businesses to take and reuse. These sturdy, natural-fiber sacks that once held our incoming beans get reincorporated into our local community. They're perfect for garden mulch, storage, market totes, or creative DIY projects. Grab one next time you visit and give it a second life!
  • Repurpose your spent grounds. After brewing, toss used coffee grounds into the compost bin for rich soil, sprinkle them as a natural fertilizer around acid-loving plants (think blueberries, hydrangeas, or roses), or mix up a quick DIY body scrub. Zero waste, zero cost.

  • Stick with organic and fair trade. Every bean we roast is responsibly sourced, supporting biodiversity and the farmers who grow them. Small-batch roasting right here in Carmel keeps our carbon footprint as low as possible.

  • Brew smarter at home. Use reusable filters, opt for compostable single-serve options when you need them.

  • Think bigger. We continue to prioritize recyclable and compostable packaging across our lineup, and we encourage everyone to join local Earth Day events—beach clean-ups, tree plantings, or community gardens—because real change happens together. Join the CVCRC team for beach clean up this month at Carmel Beach on April 18th. If you can’t make it this month, the event happens the Third Saturday of every month from 9:30am to 12:00 noon.

At Carmel Valley Coffee Roasting Company, sustainability isn’t a seasonal campaign; it’s baked into every roast we’ve done for over 30 years. This Earth Month, we invite you to join us by making small choices that add up to big impact.

Happy Earth Day from all of us at Carmel Valley Coffee! Here’s to lifting fog, breaking waves, and brewing a brighter future, one sustainable sip at a time.
