Mission Trail's name is a nod to the 21 missions that comprise California’s famed Historic Mission Trail, which lines Highway 101 and roughly tracing the El Camino Real (The Royal Road) from San Diego to Sonoma. In the 1920s, bronze mission bells were placed along the highway to let motorists know they were traveling the historic road, and they're still there today.
